Cupcakes - Baby Shower / Full Moon Celebration

Vincent & Emily recently had a new addition to the family. They requested 120 cupcakes for the first month celebration and individually packed one for their guests who attended the baby shower lunch. They needed 2 sets of packaging for the full moon cupcakes, one containing angku kueh and eggs and the other without. They wanted to make it extra special since they are Straits Born Chinese from Malacca and thus, 'bakul siah' was added into the package.

These are lacquered bamboo baskets which are called Bakul Siah in Baba Malay term. Bakul is the malay term for ‘basket’, and Siah means ‘auspicious’ in Hokkien. The red and black combination of Bakul Siah are most commonly seen and used, whereas the black and gilded ones are rare and usually ornately decorated. Back in the old days, the smaller, rounded versions were used for storing food or gifts on special occasions, especially during birthdays or festive visiting. And then, there were the wealthy Peranakans who used bakul siah to transport wedding gifts. The baskets were used in pairs, and the items associated with weddings such as garments, beadwork, jewellery, and auspicious produce such as sugarcane and oranges were exchanged between the two families during the ‘Guo Da Li’ ceremony.

Below are the pictures of the cupcakes that they ordered:
